Amtorg

Commonly known name of the Amtorg Trading Corporation, an American company established in New York in 1924 to serve as the first Soviet trade representative in the United States. The company handled the bulk of Soviet-American trade until 1935 – and continued to serve Soviet import and export firms seeking to conduct foreign trade in the United States until the end of the Communist era in 1991. In its early period, particularly before diplomatic recognition of the Soviet Union by the United States, Amtorg also served as a cover for Soviet intelligence operations.
