Coulondre, Robert (1885-1959)

French diplomat active from 1909 to 1949. From 1936 to 1938, Coulondre was the French Ambassador to Moscow; in 1938-1939, he was France’s Ambassador to Berlin. In 1939-1940, he was head of the Cabinet of the Foreign Secretary of France. In 1940, he was France’s Ambassador to Switzerland. After France was liberated from the Nazis, Coulondre headed the French delegation to the Allied Commission on Reparations. He retired in 1949, and in 1950, published a memoir about his postings in Moscow and Berlin: Robert Coulondre, De Staline a Hitler: Souvenirs de Deux Ambassades 1936-39 (Paris: Hachette, 1950).
