Duranty, Walter (1884-1957)
A British-born journalist who served as New York Times bureau chief in Moscow from 1922 to 1936. In 1932, Duranty won a Pulitzer Prize for a series of 1931 stories on the Soviet Five-Year Plan to industrialize the country. He was criticized for his favorable portrayal of Stalin and his uncritical coverage of the Moscow political show trials, at which he was an eye-witness in 1936.
